Information |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A long-tailed owl of northern forests that hunts rodents and some insects and birds during the day. Relies on sight for hunting more than hearing. Often perches in a conspicuous location at a top of a tree or snag watching for prey. Will also hover like an American Kestrel when hunting. Flight strong and rapid similar to small hawks (e.g. Cooper's Hawk). Size similar to a Peregrine Falcon. Accidental in our checklist area during the winter. Has been found south to Washington state. Movements from their year-round habitat in northern sections of the Province presumed to follow food availability. Sources: |
